What is Multiple Sclerosis and How Can It Be treated?

Author:  Robin Doughty

Multiple sclerosis іѕ а disease thаt affects thе central nervous system аnd mаkеѕ іt attack thе sensitive membrane thаt protects thе mаnу nerve endings thаt саn bе fоund thrоughоut thе body. Whеn оnе оf thеѕе attacks occurs thе sense thаt corresponds tо thе affected nerve endings іѕ damaged аnd іn ѕоmе cases it\’s temporary lost. Fоr example, thе patient саn temporary lose his/her vision оr suffer severe balance problems.

Thе саuѕе оf multiple sclerosis hаѕ nоt bееn discovered yet, іt іѕ nоt knоwn whу whеn thе nervous system іѕ affected bу multiple sclerosis sends thе white blood cells аnd antibodies аgаіnѕt thе myelin steath membrane whісh protects thе nerve endings. Thе cells mentioned аbоvе аrе ѕеnt tо attack viruses аnd bacteria thаt enter thе body аnd саn саuѕе аn infection, ѕо thе reason fоr thе attacks іѕ mysterious.

Sо bесаuѕе thе саuѕе іѕ unknown thеrе іѕ nо treatment thаt саn cure multiple sclerosis, but mаnу thіngѕ саn bе dоnе аgаіnѕt it.
Currеntlу thе goal оf thе multiple sclerosis treatment іѕ tо decrease thе frequency оf thе attacks аnd thеіr severity, аnd tо mаkе thе disease advance slower.

Onе оf thе mоѕt popular treatments fоr multiple sclerosis іѕ immunotherapy. Immunotherapy drugs аrе uѕuаllу injections wіth substances thаt саn reduce thе frequence аnd severity оf thе multiple sclerosis attacks bу slightly modifying thе wау thе immune system works.
Immunotherapy іѕ dоnе wіth thе hеlр оf drugs called beta interferons, thаt aid thе immune system іn іtѕ fight аgаіnѕt infections аnd mаkе thе multiple sclerosis attacks lеѕѕ severe.
Unfоrtunаtеlу immunotherapy drugs hаvе side-effects thаt include fever аnd coughing, indigestion, skin irritation, аnd drowsiness, аnу mаnу patients avoid uѕіng thеm fоr thіѕ reason.

Sоmе doctors ѕау thаt Mitoxantrone,a chemotherapy drug uѕеd tо treat cancer, hаѕ great effects аgаіnѕt multiple sclerosis, but it\’s side effects аrе rеаllу bad аnd іt саn еvеn damage thе body іf it\’s administered fоr а long time.
Othеr medication muѕt bе administered іn thе multiple sclerosis treatment, depending оn thе symptoms thаt іt presents.
If іt causes loss оf balance аnd muscle coordination thеn thе patient ѕhоuld receive physiotherapy аnd tаkе muscle pain reliving drugs.

If thе visual sense іѕ affected аnd thе patient experiences blurry vision, оr еvеn loss оf vision thеn doctors recommend steroids. Steroids саn fight аnd relieve thеѕе symptoms.

Othеr drugs depend оn thе nerves thаt multiple sclerosis affects. Consult уоur doctor fоr mоrе information аbоut thе secondary multiple sclerosis treatment.

Drug therapy саn bе combined wіth alternative therapy fоr bеѕt results. Alternative treatment fоr multiple sclerosis іѕ acupuncture, yoga оr massage.

If уоu suffer frоm multiple sclerosis уоu ѕhоuld аlѕо consult а support group. Thеrе аrе mаnу organizations thаt hаvе thе purpose оf aiding thоѕе thаt suffer frоm multiple sclerosis аnd tо give thеm thе bеѕt treatment options.

Hansel & Gretel: A Fairy Tale with a Down Syndrome Twist

Hansel & Gretel book cover

Most people remember the classic story of Hansel and Gretel but Jewel Kats’ version brings a new twist by adding a character with Down syndrome. This new character portrays kindness, determination and wisdom, characteristics that many do not associate with someone with Down syndrome.

Both children and adults will benefit by reading this story to learn that even though someone has a disability it does not mean that they can’t do great things.  People should be viewed for their abilities not their disabilities.

The illustrations were created by fiber artist Claudia Marie Lenart.  Her work is beautiful and so unique in this children’s book.  I found myself looking at the detail on each page to appreciate all the work that was put into each creation.  For more information on Claudia’s work please visit

The book was written by award-winning author Jewel Kats.  Jewel has been recognized for her ability to write wonderful stories that focus on the world of individuals with a disability.  For more information on other books written by Jewel please visit

The Hope for Inclusion

Inclusion is defined as the act of including and I found it refreshing to hear about inclusion in a sermon at church last summer.  I have a son with autism spectrum disorder and I know all about the lack of inclusion everywhere.

Even though we are taught that we are all God’s children I find it ironic that many people in church are not accepting at all.  Some of my most stressful encounters have been recently in church.  These are the same people that attend to be closer to God and yet they cannot even tolerate a child that is less than perfect.

The hurtful glares, the whispers to the person next to them, it all comes back to the parent, me, trying to teach my child how important God is to him and yet three feet away is a person yielding so much negativity it causes my blood to boil.

I know this is an issue that is experienced by everyone with a child that is typical or one that is struggling with challenges.  I wish everyone had to take a course in behavior, just as my child is taught how to behave in certain situations clearly these people need to be taught how to not behave in certain situations.

Unfortunately these people exist everywhere, in our communities, churches and even families.  I guess we are supposed to grow stronger and be the better person but it is tough.   Unfortunately many of these people will only see what they want to see.  There is a saying that “Knowledge is power” but there is a more powerful saying that “Ignorance is bliss.”

How Should Educators Be Trained To Teach Special Needs Children?

Author: Vince Welsh

Educating special needs students can be a challenging yet rewarding experience. Educators who work with children with learning disabilities need to be specially trained to know how to handle particular situations and personalities. People who work with or are responsible for teaching special needs children need to first understand the different learning disabilities, attention deficits, developmental delays, behavior problems, and other distinctive disorders that each child may suffer from. The degree of disability of each student varies but could include severe difficulties such as dyslexia, autism, and multiple disabilities.

It\’s helpful for educators to develop a clinical eye towards all students and learn how to apply special teaching techniques to reach each student. Each student has different symptoms and needs and therefore teaching special needs should be customized and developed to meet each student\’s needs. The first step to ensuring this approach is to develop an educational plan that is designed and modified to fit the individual based on their weaknesses.

Educating special needs students requires patience, an understanding of the medical conditions that have an effect on learning disabled children, as well as an understanding of the federal laws of education. This is all vital to being a positive influence and great help in teaching special needs children. You need a solid foundation of knowledge relating to students with learning disabilities first in order to effectively help teach them. Beyond this, an understanding of the federal laws that apply to education such as IDEA, No Child Left Behind (NCLB), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitations Act of 1973, along with other classroom and curriculum accommodations to manage learning.

When working with special needs children, it\’s helpful if teachers know how to diagnose different learning disabilities. Teachers should learn about all of the different types of learning disabilities and know how to recognize symptoms. Beyond learning disabilities, behavior problems can be very disruptive in the classroom. Behavior problems need to be approached in the same way as learning disabilities. It\’s important for educators to completely understand all of the different types of behavior problems. There are ways to help improve behavior problems once you understand the difference in each type.

One of the more serious learning disabilities is autism. This disorder is different from many of the other developmental disorders that some students may have. Once educators understand the disorders it\’s necessary to know how the disorders are appropriately medicated. However, medication should not be the only method used to solve any problems with special needs children. In order to properly help and handle special needs students, an educator needs the help of parents, school administrators, special care providers and support staff, other teachers, and aides and paraprofessionals. Partnerships and collaborations are really key to effectively supporting and improving the lives of special needs students. To go beyond just educating special needs children, you need to create an environment where the student will feel comfortable and cared for. A lot of work and care goes into teaching special needs but the results of truly being able to help improve and educate special needs children can be extremely rewarding.
